But first I need to tell you how this song ran me over, because it was a scene worthy of a K-drama (a good one).

If you read my article on the BTS Arirang album, you already know: I listened to it for the first time and was completely done for. I started with the SWIM MV, as ARMY protocol demands, and right there, my dear, I was gone. Then, after that baptism by fire (by water, in this case), I hit play on the album, Body to Body came in hard and gave me goosebumps from head to toe. Up to that point, everything was under control. Okay, more or less.

Then, out of nowhere, the second song starts with a sound like blades clashing, swords or knives, who knows, and then comes that beat nobody warned me about. The only sentence that formed in my head was “oh my God, how am I supposed to sleep after this?”

Important context: the album dropped at 1 a.m. my time (1 p.m. in Korea). My husband was asleep in the bedroom, the neighbors were one thin wall away, and there I was in the living room, in the dark, headphones on, unable to make a sound. If I had screamed the way I wanted to, someone would have called the police, and fairly so. Result: I screamed on the inside. I don’t recommend it. It gives you an ulcer.

So hit play here, turn the volume up (the neighbors will deal with it, or your ears will) and come with me:

<figure song

Hooligan is the second track on Arirang, BTS’s fifth studio album, released on March 20, 2026, by BigHit Music. It’s considered alternative hip-hop and runs about 3 minutes. Like most BTS songs, the Hooligan lyrics mix English and Korean, and the track opens with a sound of sharpened blades that comes back again and again throughout.

Oh, and here’s a fun fact few people know: underneath all that chaos there’s a sample of Yang Tse-Kiang, a piece French composer Michel Magne wrote for the soundtrack of Un singe en hiver, a 1962 film directed by Henri Verneuil, starring Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo. That’s why Magne’s name shows up in the songwriting credits, right next to the boys. Go ahead, check it on your Spotify. And then there’s the laugh, of course. I’ll get to it.

All seven members sing on Hooligan, and each one gets his moment to cause delicious trouble. Namjoon, Yoongi, and j-hope handle the raps, while Jin, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jung Kook share the choruses and the second verse.

In the United States, Hooligan peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside the US, the story was even better: No. 3 on the Billboard Global Excl. US right out of the gate.

Hooligan credits and song facts

For the credits nerds (hi, that’s me):

Album: Arirang (5th studio album);

Track number: 2 of 14;

Release date: March 20, 2026;

Length: 3:02;

Genre: alternative hip-hop;

Label: BigHit Music;

Producers: El Guincho, Fakeguido, Jasper Harris, and Ghstloop;

Songwriters: El Guincho (Pablo Díaz-Reixa), Michel Magne, Fakeguido (Pablo Martínez Alborch), MarcLo, Eskeerdo, Jung Kook, Delacey, Jasper Harris, RM, j-hope, SUGA, Derrick Milano, Pdogg, and Kirsten Spencer;

Sample: Yang Tse-Kiang, by Michel Magne, from the soundtrack of the French film Un singe en hiver (1962);

Languages: English and Korean.

Now pay attention to one name on that list: El Guincho. This Spaniard born in the Canary Islands is one of the brains behind Rosalía’s El Mal Querer and Motomami, two records that sound like they were built from the pieces of three different puzzles and still fit together perfectly. On Hooligan, his signature shows up in the cutting percussion, the chopped-up samples, and that feeling that the song could fly off the rails at any second (spoiler: it doesn’t). If you felt this song sounds different from everything BTS has done before, you can blame him. I’d thank him in person if I could.

Hooligan BTS lyrics, English translation, and pronunciation

Here’s everything in one place: the original Hooligan BTS lyrics with who sings each part, the English translation of the Korean lines, and the pronunciation so you can sing along whenever you want. Today most people link the word to football: the violent fan, the vandal in the stands. Not exactly a compliment, right? And yet BTS made a point of putting it in the title and repeating it all through the Hooligan BTS lyrics until it got stuck in your head (along with the laugh). There’s a reason for that, of course, and it starts in London, back in the 19th century.

Where the word hooligan comes from

The origin of the word is a bit murky, and scholars are still fighting over it (which, let’s admit, is very hooligan of them). The most famous version comes from The Hooligan Nights, an 1899 book by journalist Clarence Rook, which credits the term to one Patrick Hooligan, an Irishman from Southwark, in London, who gathered followers and made his own laws around there. Some people prefer other theories: that it comes from an Irish family named Houlihan, famous for brawling, or from an Islington gang called the Hooley, or even from an Irish word tied to partying and revelry. Very Peaky Blinders vibes, if you ask me. Well, pick your version.

Over time, the word lost its proper name and became something like a category: it came to describe the young man who runs with a group, makes noise, breaks things, and disturbs the peace. It crossed Europe, reached the Soviet Union as khuligan, a term used against troublemakers and dissidents, and in the 20th century it was adopted for good by English football. That’s the image almost everyone has today when they hear the word.

And notice this: in none of these versions does the hooligan walk alone. He’s always with a gang, a crew, or even a whole crowd. Hold on to that.

The BTS gang

Now listen to the song with that in mind. From start to finish, Hooligan describes a group that arrives, takes over the whole space, and wrecks everything on purpose. Except the gang doesn’t stay up there on stage. j-hope spends his entire first verse looking at the audience: the crowd jumping, everyone together on the one, two, and his confession that he can’t pick anyone out because every single person there inspires him. The hooligan is you too, down there, with your Army Bomb in hand.

That’s why its place on the album makes me so happy. Look: Body to Body opens Arirang asking you to put down the damn phone and be present, body to body. Hooligan comes right after and shows what happens when that request is answered: the stadium boils, the bass drops, and the crowd becomes one thing. It’s no accident that, on tour, it’s the song that opens the show.

What Hooligan really means

There’s a little word in the chorus that slips by the first time you listen: again. They pop out and act a fool again. Again. After almost four years apart, with seven enlistments, solo careers, and a whole fandom hearing that OT7 was over, BTS chose to come back introducing themselves exactly as the gang they always were.

That’s where the song does something the Arirang album repeats more than once: it takes a label meant to put someone down and wears it like a uniform. The hooligan is the troublemaker nobody wants around. On the next track, Aliens, they become seven aliens who have been different since birth. Two words that, for years, could sum up everything people said about them: too strange, too Korean to fit the market. On Arirang, those words become a name they claim for themselves.

Namjoon, near the end, says it with no filter:

“We the mess, gonna get a bigger mop here”

And then the laugh that runs through the song takes on a different meaning. After years of people betting on the end of the group, they’re the ones laughing last, with the whole stadium laughing along. If that’s being a hooligan, my dear, I want the T-shirt.

Jung Kook and the most rehearsed laugh on the album

And if there’s a head hooligan in this story, it’s Jung Kook. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he said he worked hard on this song and that, the first time he heard the beat, the flow came to him right away. He also said he thought the track was so different that maybe he just got lucky, but that Bang Si-hyuk and the other members found it really fresh and loved it, and that he didn’t even know whether it would make the album. It did, thank goodness. And when the interviewer praised the English lyrics, he did that very Jung Kook thing of handing the compliment back: he didn’t write it all by himself, he had a lot of help. Sure, Jung Kook. Sure.

The sweet part comes next: in the same interview, he said he still wonders why he didn’t do a little more, since two months in the studio is a long time, and that he has a lot of regrets about it. The man helps build the song that opens the entire tour and walks away thinking he could have done more. Hey, maknae, please, get some rest.

And before anyone says Hooligan is a mess with no method… honey, the chaos is fully calculated. In March, at a fan event hosted by Spotify in New York, Namjoon revealed that the Hooligan laugh, recorded by Jung Kook, had to land exactly on the beat, and that JK struggled to nail it. Poor baby. The takes became a running joke in the studio until they got the version you hear. In other words: that ha-ha-ha that sounds like spontaneous mockery was rehearsed until it was perfect. Hooligan, yes. Sloppy? Never.

The French sample that sounds Korean

Remember the French sample I mentioned up top? As I said, it comes from Yang Tse-Kiang, the piece composer Michel Magne wrote for Un singe en hiver, a 1962 French film directed by Henri Verneuil, starring Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Think that’s no big deal? Billboard France didn’t think so, and even tweeted about it.

— Billboard France (@BillboardFr) March 20, 2026

Michel Magne, by the way, is the same composer behind the soundtracks of Les Tontons flingueurs and Fantômas, French cinema classics from the 1960s. In other words: BTS went and pulled a piece of their comeback from a movie your French grandma (if you had one) probably saw in theaters.

It’s a detail, an old French film orchestration, chopped up and buried under Korean hip-hop, and sounding Korean. Weird? Maybe. Does it work? Absolutely. Another BTS song built with layers upon layers, literally.

The boogeyman, military slang, and K-pop

At one point in the song, Yoongi compares himself to El Cucuy, a creature from Mexican and Latin American folklore, basically the boogeyman: that terrifying presence everyone has heard about since childhood, no explanation needed. That’s exactly what he says right after, in Korean: that you already know without him having to say it. A seven-headed boogeyman, dressed in black, with lightsticks in the background. Scared? Not at all. Hoping to get haunted? Uh-huh.

Right after that comes the Korean expression 이상 무 (isang mu), which, if you’re a little obsessed with Arirang like me and have played the album more than 500 times (yes, as a proper charts stan, that’s real), you’ve already read along in rhythm. It’s the standard way of reporting, in the Korean military, that everything is in order, nothing to report. Seven men who had just finished their military service slipped barracks jargon into the rowdiest song on the album. All clear, mission accomplished, now get ouuuut of the way. I laughed out loud (on the inside, remember?). And to wrap it up, Namjoon announces, on his own near the end, that this right here is K, it’s pop, and it’s going to play all the time.

Well, Arirang is an album about identity, and Hooligan makes that clear in the most BTS way possible: pulling references from all over the world. And Namjoon, my dear, you weren’t wrong. Six months later, it’s still playing at my house all the time.

The Hooligan MV, the stages, and everything that came after

Hooligan may not have been the album’s main focus track, but it got an MV, it’s the song BTS chose to open the show and, for obvious reasons, it ended up everywhere.

The official Hooligan MV

The Hooligan MV premiered on April 7, 2026 (already April 8, midnight, in Korea), as the third music video of the Arirang era, after SWIM and 2.0. I’ll leave it right here, in case you want to watch it again:

According to Billboard Brasil, the MV passed 1 million views on YouTube in half an hour, and GMA counted 7.4 million views in under 24 hours. Not bad for a song that wasn’t even the album’s main track, huh?

The mood of this MV is a kind of dystopian fantasy, as Billboard described it: there are dark, barren landscapes covered in fog and dust, the seven beautifully placed on top of a red platform with masked dancers around them and a stone palace in the background. There’s also a stretch in a dark passageway where people float above them, defying gravity. All in black, with a very future Game of Thrones feel, leather balaclavas in some scenes, and choreography that makes you want to pause every ten seconds to figure out what’s going on.

Obviously, there are easter eggs too. Longtime fans, or anyone who went deep into BTS, will notice right away that the video opens in a parking garage, a very clear reference to the Not Today MV, from 2017. And that’s naming just ONE reference. There are more, and I’m sure I haven’t spotted many of them yet.

The song that opens the Arirang tour

Since the tour kicked off on April 9, 2026, at Goyang Stadium, in South Korea, the shows have opened with an intro built from elements of the song, followed by the full track. It rained hard that first night, and still about 40,000 soaked fans were there when the sound of the blades began. In its review of one of the Goyang shows, NME described fireworks going off in time with the blades on the beat.

I keep imagining what it’s like to live that in person: my living room at 1 a.m., except with an entire stadium of people who are actually allowed to scream. If you’ve already been to a show on this tour: I hope you screamed your heart out. And if your date is still coming up, now you know what’s waiting for you in the first few seconds.

Hooligan at the 2026 American Music Awards

On May 25, 2026, the song was performed at the 52nd American Music Awards. Except that the people inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, watched a video: the performance had been recorded earlier, at one of the tour’s shows at Allegiant Stadium, where the group was playing a four-night run that started on May 23. Red lights, smoke, masked dancers, ARMY with lightsticks held high, and the seven in black from head to toe. Perfect. See it with your own eyes:

Later, the boys showed up in person at the ceremony to accept the awards for Artist of the Year and Song of the Summer, for SWIM. A pre-recorded performance because they were mid-tour, a live ceremony, and the tour again the next day. I get tired just writing it.

The FESTA Performance Video

On June 4, 2026, kicking off the group’s 13th anniversary celebrations, BigHit released the Official Performance Video for Hooligan, directed by Hannah Lux Davis. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch it with headphones and some time to spare, because once won’t be enough. The league teamed up with BTS for the start of the 2026 season: the first Opening Day video used FYA, and later MLB’s official TikTok called on fans to do the Hooligan Challenge.

This friendship with baseball, by the way, goes back to before the album. On August 25, 2025, for example, Taehyung threw the ceremonial first pitch at the game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds, at Dodger Stadium, wearing the number 7 jersey, complete with a hug from Shohei Ohtani and a left-handed strike. I’d love to say the song played at the stadium that day, but it hadn’t even come out yet. Maybe next time, Dodgers.

Hooligan BTS lyrics: frequently asked questions

Here are the questions that come up most in searches, with quick answers for anyone in a hurry (I know you are).

What does hooligan mean in the BTS song?

Hooligan means troublemaker or rowdy, someone who acts with a gang and causes chaos. In the song, BTS uses the word to describe the energy of the group and the crowd at the show: a collective, loud, and deliberate chaos that celebrates the seven’s return to the stage.

Who wrote BTS Hooligan?

RM, SUGA, j-hope, and Jung Kook share songwriting credits with El Guincho, Michel Magne, Fakeguido, MarcLo, Eskeerdo, Delacey, Jasper Harris, Derrick Milano, Pdogg, and Kirsten Spencer. It was produced by El Guincho, Fakeguido, Jasper Harris, and Ghstloop.

Are the Hooligan BTS lyrics in English or Korean?

Both. The chorus is in English, and the verses switch between English and Korean. That’s why the English translation matters mostly for the Korean lines.

Who does the laugh in Hooligan?

The laugh in the background is Jung Kook’s, although several members “sing” it in the song. According to Namjoon, it had to land exactly on the beat, and the maknae needed several takes in the studio to get it right.

What is El Cucuy in the Hooligan lyrics?

El Cucuy is a creature from Mexican and Latin American folklore, similar to the boogeyman. In the song, it shows up as a comparison: BTS describes itself as a terrifying presence everyone recognizes without needing an explanation.

What is the sample in Hooligan?

The song samples Yang Tse-Kiang, a piece by Michel Magne for the soundtrack of the 1962 French film Un singe en hiver. That’s why Magne is listed in the songwriting credits.

How did Hooligan do on the charts?

On the global charts, it reached No. 3 on the Billboard Global Excl. US, and in the United States it peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Is Hooligan performed on the Arirang tour?

Yes. The song has opened every show on the tour since the premiere, on April 9, 2026, in Goyang, right after an intro built from elements of the song itself.

The laugh that won’t leave my head

Six months later, I can answer the question I asked myself in that dark living room that night: I didn’t sleep. At least not anytime soon. I stayed there, headphones on, replaying the whole album, texting the girls who were also awake, freaking out in the Bangtan Now chat on Telegram with the channel’s subscribers, and pretending to myself that I’d listen just one more time before going to bed. Let’s not talk about how many times I said that before I actually went, okay?

What I know is that this song does exactly what its title promises, with the precision of someone who rehearsed a laugh until it landed right on time, something only a group like BTS would do. And if one day I’m in a stadium when that blade sound starts, the neighbors will finally be far enough away for me to scream everything that got stuck in my throat that night.

Now tell me in the comments: where were you when you first heard Hooligan? And, more importantly, did you manage to stay quiet?

Hahahahahahahahaha (hooligan)

Hooligan BTS lyrics with English translation, pronunciation, and the meaning of the word that opens every show on the Arirang tour.
