Since part of the song is in Korean (and I am nowhere near fluent), it took me a good few minutes between listening, getting hold of the lyrics, translating and, finally, grasping the size of the punch.

I heard the song when Arirang came out. I understood the English easily, but the Korean went past me like a conversation in the next room: I could feel the mood, but the words… And the mood, my dear, was great, the kind I love when BTS delivers. As I already told you about the Arirang album, it won me over right away for being so different from what BTS had been releasing in recent years and, even so, carrying so much of the DNA of their early days.

Watching the boys, in the middle of a comeback, release something so bold, experimental and far from what newer fans knew gave me that certainty: they are incredible, they know it, and this 2.0 version is better than ever. Full stop. Applause too.

Then, a few hours later, the lyrics were released and I went to understand. The size of the wallop (sorry, that’s my technical term) hit hard, along with the realization of how it fits into the perfect storytelling of Arirang.

And I wasn’t the only one reading it with new eyes, okay? More than four months after its release, the song went back to No. 1 on iTunes in dozens of countries, and the reason involves the ARMY, an award and a category that I really need to talk about with you. Hold on, I’ll get there. First, press play (since there is no MV, the video below is the official visualizer):

<iframe title="Spotify Embed: Aliens" style="border-radius: 12px" width="100%" height="152" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen allow="autoplay; It mixes Korean and English, has no music video (only the visualizer on YouTube) and is produced by American Mike WiLL Made-It, together with other producers. According to Namjoon himself, it came together around the same time as Hooligan, in Jung Kook and j-hope‘s room.

All seven members sing on it. Yoongi opens the song, j-hope comes in next, Jung Kook and Taehyung hold down the first chorus, Jimin and Jin join the chant, and Namjoon takes the second verse.

It was never released as a single. Even so, it debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In August, after the July surge, it returned to Billboard’s digital song sales chart (Digital Song Sales) and reached No. 4, a new peak.

Aliens Song Details and Credits

The credits of Aliens have plenty of big names, and I have a soft spot for a good credits list, so here it is:

Aliens

BTS · Mine takes into account almost 14 years of following the boys, a lot of study of Korea and its culture, research into specific terms and a semiotic lens (the study of symbols and the meanings they carry) and a semantic one (the meaning of words and how they change with context). Historical and cultural context, comparison with the rest of the discography and attention to the language each line appears in also come into play. None of this came from the voices in my head, although someone else, listening to theirs, might reach different conclusions. And that’s fine. 😬

Aliens is the song where BTS sort of swaps things around. Instead of explaining Korea to people coming from outside, as they were probably expected to do, the seven take on the role of hosts here and treat the foreigner as a guest who has to follow the rules of the place if they want to stay. Fair enough, if you ask me. Nobody had to call the seven of them aliens out loud to treat them as such, and that unspoken label is what they now carry as a badge of pride. My favorite little aliens.

And this treatment has a very concrete origin. In October 2025, at the APEC summit in Gyeongju, Namjoon said that when they told people they were artists from Korea, back in the early days, and until quite recently, nobody asked about their music. People wanted to know whether they were from North or South Korea, as if it were, I don’t know, another planet.

So, What Does Aliens by BTS Mean?

Here is the direct answer for anyone who arrived in quick-search mode: Aliens means proudly taking on the role of the “other” that the West has always reserved for BTS. They were never called aliens in so many words, but they were always treated as such. Bangtan took that unspoken label, turned it into a badge and started demanding from newcomers what has always been demanded of them: learn the language, respect the customs and follow the house rules.

Anyone who sits down to really read the lyrics and try to understand them will notice that they build this up in layers. Right in the first verse, Yoongi says the seven of them have been different since birth, that the civilians are dying of envy and that explaining it is just too tiring. The choice of the word “civilians”, by the way, is great. The ones calling other people civilians are seven men who have just finished their mandatory military service. Coming from them, the word makes it pretty clear that no, they are not on the same level. And they really aren’t. j-hope comes in asking whether he looks too funny and immediately challenges whoever is laughing: what are you going to do about it? In the chorus, the visitor gets the instructions: learn the Korean alphabet from beginning to end, leave your shoes at the door, mind your manners. Anyone who walks into their house with shoes on and without knowing a single letter of the Korean alphabet is called “shameless”, with that classic scolding from a host who won’t put up with a rude guest (I love it, by the way). And the reminder that the sun rises in the east wraps up the message: the day starts on their side.

In the second verse, Namjoon addresses Kim Gu, who led Korea’s independence movement and is known for defending the strength of culture over the strength of the military, and asks how he feels. You can read this almost as an accounting: the Korea made strong by culture that Kim Gu dreamed of now fills stadiums around the world. Namjoon remarks that everybody already knows where the K is, asks whether they are still trying to curse them and answers that the misfortune turned into good luck. The verse ends on the astonishment of someone watching with wide eyes, unable to believe they are serious. But they are.

The beat follows the same line: a heavy 808 (808 is the deep-bass electronic drum sound that underpins a big part of hip-hop), repetitive and bare. There is no room for lightness there, and in that insistence I hear the attitude of someone who is not going to bother explaining again. Live, the tone holds, and on stage I see no winking at all, only serious faces from people who know exactly what message they are sending.

The humor is in the details (the request for good manners, Namjoon’s tease about being the only one who speaks English), but it serves the message, and the message is serious: whoever wants to come into the house has to learn the rules. That is why BTS’s decision about the Grammys, which I’ll get to shortly, feels so consistent with the lyrics.

Who Sets the House Rules

What we see in the Aliens BTS lyrics also works almost like a poster of house rules, the kind a teacher hangs in the classroom with items like “don’t hit your classmates”, only in an adult version. The rules are very clear: want to get to know BTS? Then you have to take your shoes off before entering their house, learn the Korean alphabet from the first letter to the last and clap along to the jungmori. The jungmori is the moderate beat of traditional Korean music, common in pansori, which is what the country’s narrative singing is called.

Each item takes a custom the West tends to find strange and presents it as the norm there.

One detail I didn’t let slip by: the choruses, which talk about sleepless nights and everything happening faster and faster. That’s where I noticed palli-palli (빨리빨리, the “hurry, hurry” that sets the pace of Korean life), another thing foreigners find strange, and criticize to an absurd degree, which our beloved Bangtan turned into a chant.

Another observation: in the second verse, Namjoon teases that he is the only one there who speaks English. It’s true that for most of BTS’s career he has been the bridge between the members and the rest of the world precisely because of his English. Now we see the other six increasingly dedicated to the language, not because they have to, but because they clearly understand how important it is in the world. Even so, anyone who watched the BTS documentary on Netflix saw the discussion about the label pushing for more English in the songs and the group’s answer: they wanted more Korean, if anything. Seeing that same conversation enter the song, as a provocation, has an irony I love.

Because, let’s be honest, it’s exhausting to watch people on their livestreams asking them to speak English. We need to understand the obvious: they are Korean. We are the ones entering their culture, and we are the ones who have to figure things out. They have been speaking up more and more, asking people to stop making that request. It’s more than fair. Besides, fanbases have done dedicated translation work from the very beginning, and we have always been able to understand everything, even if a little later. Weverse now also has subtitles in any language (okay, rough ones, but they already help a lot), even on the cheapest plan, so there is no reason to sit around waiting for them to speak any language other than Korean. Aliens itself already says, in its lines, who has to learn.

How the Song Fits Into Arirang

The whole album revolves around reaffirming who BTS is, and Aliens is the most direct version of that move. Body to Body opens the album asking for physical presence and bringing in the folk song that gives it its name. Hooligan, right after, was already picking up a label meant to put someone down and wearing it with pride. Here the gesture repeats with the treatment of foreigners and takes the conversation to language: the alternation between Korean and English becomes the subject of the lyrics, and not just a device.

There is also a nice irony in the credits. One of the producers of a song about hosts and guests is American, Mike WiLL Made-It, who also came out in defense of the group on social media when the song went back to the top in July.

From Endless to Aliens: How the Song Was Born

In a Weverse livestream on May 28, Namjoon went through the album song by song, and the story of this one was a little curious. Because, in fact, Aliens was born with a different title, Endless, and the placeholder lyrics were about a road with no end up to the top. Namjoon found the idea too vague, but he liked the sound of the words, and Endless and Aliens sound alike. The swap kept the sonic fit and gave the song a different subject: it came to say, in his words, “We’re aliens, so what?”

Writing in Korean was the hard part of the song. It started with a lot of English, the other members struggled with the pronunciation and, since the song is about Korea, the lyrics came to alternate between the two languages, which took a long time to work (but you can feel the care). Namjoon also said he hoped for a reversal effect with ARMY from other countries singing along, with outsiders adapting to the house rules, and that the lyrics might even become a meme or a parody.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, he had already explained that the lyrics point to Asian customs that foreigners find odd, such as the request to take your shoes off and wear slippers inside the house, complete with a scolding about people who climb onto a hotel bed with their shoes on. The album, he said, is about pride in being Korean and Asian, and the song carries references that only people who grew up in Korea and the Far East recognized, but which have now become better known for anyone who wanted to understand more.

Aliens Live on the Arirang Tour

At the premiere of the Arirang tour, on April 9, at Goyang Stadium in South Korea, it was the second song of the show, right after Hooligan and before Run BTS. It’s an opener that matches the lyrics: imagine a whole stadium singing that BTS is back and that nobody there is going to apologize for it, quite the opposite.

Aliens, the Grammys and BTS’s Decision

On July 29, the seven members posted the same statement, each on their own social media: they would not be submitting songs for the 2027 Grammys. The text doesn’t name any category, but the reading is obvious. The decision came a little over a month after the Recording Academy announced five new categories, among them Best Asian Pop Music Performance, which requires significant use of an Asian language. Within a few hours, in response, ARMY took the song to No. 1 on iTunes in dozens of countries. The statement said:

“We have decided not to submit for Grammy consideration this year. We hope our music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language. We thank ARMY and everyone who has always stood by us.”

The Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., said he was sad but respected the decision, and defended the category: according to him, more categories mean more artists recognized, and anyone who submits to a genre category remains eligible for the general ones, according to a statement to ABC News. HYBE later clarified that the decision is not a boycott at the company level.

For the general categories, the defense makes sense. The genre category, however, has its own rules, and that is where the math gets less simple.

According to the Grammy rulebook, a song is only eligible in a single genre field, and the Academy reserves the right to decide which category each entry goes in. For Asian Pop, for example, the recording needs significant use of one or more Asian languages: isolated words, ad-libs and short phrases don’t count, and songs entirely in English are out. Aliens would pass the criterion. Swim, the title track of Arirang, entirely in English, would not. The category looks at the language of the recording, not at who is singing, which, in practice, can leave an Asian artist out of it with a song of their own.

Even so, the question I ask without beating around the bush still stands: does a category like this value or segregate? Language as a yardstick is nothing new at the Academy: the new Best Latin Song, which debuts in the same edition, only accepts songs with at least 51% of the lyrics in Spanish, which leaves out Portuguese from Brazil. In my reading, the yardstick weighs differently in each case, because a Brazilian artist, for example, rarely writes in Spanish, while an Asian artist mixes languages all the time (Aliens itself is here to prove it).

And there is something that bothers me more than the language yardstick: how the category was defined. It covers pop that is born in or widely recognized in Asian markets, while pop without an adjective remains the default. Asian pop gets an adjective and a shelf of its own, instead of competing on equal terms. Sound familiar? It’s the treatment of the “other” that the song describes, now inside an awards show. I don’t know what the intention of the people who created it was, and I’d rather believe it was a good one, but the effect, in my reading, is this.

Anyone who has followed BTS for years knows the Grammys have always been a declared dream of the boys. Namjoon once called the Grammys “the final part of the whole American journey”, and the group was nominated five times without winning. Giving that up, before any other artist and, above all, in a year when the chance of finally taking a Grammy home was huge, is an enormous gesture.

In my analysis, which the statement doesn’t confirm but which fits with every line of the song, they gave up the dream out of respect for the other Asian artists, and not for themselves. BTS is big enough to afford not competing without losing prominence, since their success never depended on the Academy. Those artists, like Latin artists and so many others, want to compete on equal footing and have more than enough quality to do so.

The reaction that caught my attention most came from inside the structure of the award itself. Zeena Koda, a member of the advisory committee of the Recording Academy’s Gold Music Alliance, who said she worked on creating the category, used her Instagram Stories to react to BTS’s decision. I read the stories while they were up, and the tone was harsh: in her reading, the group was harming other artists and acting against the category, which, according to her, wasn’t even aimed at established stars like them. She called the buzz a “press campaign”, reminded people that BTS could enter another pop category and said the group could have talked privately. I found that strange, to say the least.

But BTS didn’t call for any boycott, didn’t ask for the category to be scrapped and didn’t criticize anyone. They decided not to take part and closed the subject right there. Talking privately wouldn’t make sense either: they have no power to change a Grammy category, so there was nothing to negotiate behind closed doors. To me, Zeena spoke in the heat of the moment, and what she said leaves a question hanging: if the category wasn’t designed for a group the size of BTS, who was it designed for? The episode also shows that BTS’s decision wasn’t well received even among people who helped structure the category.

The story didn’t stop there. On October 1, the Academy confirmed it will keep the category, and the next day JYP said Stray Kids also hadn’t submitted songs. Here is the question I ask without accusing anyone: is a category created to make room for Asian artists fulfilling that role, or is it separating those artists from the rest of the awards show? I have my answer, and I’d like to hear yours in the comments. My criticism here is of the design of the category and the Academy’s rules, and not of American artists or audiences. Proof of that is that the American producer of Aliens came out in the group’s defense.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aliens by BTS

Here are the questions that come up most about the song, with quick answers.

What does Aliens by BTS mean?

Aliens is the song where BTS proudly takes on the role of the outsider that the West has always reserved for the group. In the lyrics, the seven declare themselves aliens, tell the visitor to take off their shoes, learn the Korean alphabet and mind their manners, and put anyone who reduces them to that label in the position of having to adapt. Namjoon summed up the idea as “We’re aliens, so what?”

Who wrote Aliens by BTS?

The songwriting is credited to Namjoon, j-hope, Jung Kook and Yoongi, with Mike WiLL Made-It, Pluss, Donut, Khaled Rohaim, Prince Charlez, Truebeatzz, James Essien, John Mitchell, Derrick Milano and Pdogg. Production is by Mike WiLL Made-It, Pluss, Donut and Khaled Rohaim, with vocal production by Pdogg.

Are the Aliens lyrics by BTS in English or Korean?

Both. The verses and choruses alternate between Korean and English, and the mix is part of the song’s theme.

Does Aliens have an official music video?

No. The song has no MV (music video), only an official visualizer on YouTube.

What was Aliens’ best chart position?

It debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. In July, it reached No. 1 on iTunes in 78 regions and, in August, hit No. 4 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales, the song’s best result on that chart.

Why did Aliens go back to the top of iTunes in July?

Because BTS announced they would not be submitting songs for the 2027 Grammys and ARMY responded with a streaming campaign. The lyrics, which talk about being treated as a foreigner, came to be read as a comment on the new Asian pop category. ARMY then did what it does best: bought the song in bulk and put it at the top, sending a clear message to anyone who wants to listen. And to anyone who doesn’t, too.

What is jungmori in the Aliens lyrics?

Jungmori is a moderate rhythm of traditional Korean music, common in pansori. In the song, j-hope mentions it when asking for claps.

From the Inside

I heard Aliens for the first time without understanding half of the words, but already feeling the size of the message. After translating it, reading the interviews and following the Grammy saga, the message became clear, and BTS’s decision felt consistent with every rule nailed to the door of the house.

The seven didn’t ask to be let in anywhere. They said what they expect from whoever arrives, and who arrived, this time, was the most famous awards show in the world, with a category defined by language, a rulebook that measures how much Korean fits in a song and a member of the advisory committee reacting badly to people who simply chose not to take part. The song was ready months before any of those scenes. Almost a prophecy, huh? Holy BTS.

What’s left is the audience. Namjoon said he hoped to see ARMY from other countries singing along, the outsider following the house rules. It’s happening: fans all over the world learning the Korean alphabet, memorizing the pronunciation, singing Arirang at the top of their lungs, with ARMY around the world practicing Korean with the pronunciation tab open on their phones. The reversal the song proposes has become routine for the people who love them. Now tell me in the comments: do you think BTS was right to stay out? And what’s your favorite line from Aliens?

Aliens BTS lyrics with English translation, pronunciation and meaning of the Arirang song about
