Simple: when the artists they support go far beyond extraordinary themselves.

That’s BTS. That’s ARMY.

In this article, we’ll explore the origins of the BTS ARMY, how it evolved, its actions in support of the group and society, and how it established itself as the largest K-pop fandom and one of the biggest in the world today.

Its significance is so powerful that its impact goes beyond the pop scene. Proof of that is the documentary “Forever We Are Young,” which tells the story of the ARMY fandom and premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, on March 10. When the BTS and ARMY logos are combined, they form a shield — symbolizing protection and unity between the two. This concept reinforces the idea that BTS and ARMY are always together, supporting each other.

<img decoding="async" data-srcset="https://bangtannow.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Army-BTS-Symbol-Bangtan-Now-EN.png ,https://bangtannow.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Army-BTS-Symbol-Bangtan-Now-EN.png 780w, https://bangtannow.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Army-BTS-Symbol-Bangtan-Now-EN.png 360w" data-sizes="auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px" data-src="https://bangtannow.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Army-BTS-Symbol-Bangtan-Now-EN.png" alt="A black background image showing the symbolic logos of BTS and their fandom, Army BTS. Since the beginning, the fandom has played a crucial role in BTS’s success by organizing events, campaigns, and projects to support the group. ARMY is also known for its power on social media and international award voting.

This growth was driven by BTS’s active presence on social platforms, where they maintain a constant and direct connection with their fans. Platforms like Twitter, V Live, and Weverse became vital channels for communication between BTS and ARMY, strengthening bonds and creating a unique sense of closeness.

In K-pop, it’s traditional for groups to foster much stronger interactions with their fandoms than what typically happens in Western music. Even before debuting, agencies promote several fan engagement activities like fan meetings, showcases (small, often exclusive performances), and soundchecks (rehearsals before concerts), all designed to build a deep connection between new groups and their growing fanbase. Without this, no K-pop group survives in one of the most competitive music markets in the world.

It’s no surprise that BTS’s ARMY has become one of the most influential fandoms in the world, redefining the artist-fan relationship through unmatched dedication and engagement.

BTS: A Tough but Creative Beginning – The Power of Social Media

BTS wasn’t the first group to create initiatives for its fandom, but it was a pioneer in intensive online interaction. Today, this is not only common — it’s expected for any K-pop group.

Back in 2013, when BTS was just starting out, success for a new group depended heavily on appearances on TV shows. But there was a big problem…

BTS was formed under Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE), a small agency at the time — almost a startup — much smaller than the “Big Three” (SM, YG, and JYP, still industry giants in South Korea). These companies dominated the media, and their groups were favored on TV. BTS was often pushed aside — either not invited or cut from broadcasts last minute while waiting backstage.

They also didn’t have the budget for trendy outfits, premium makeup, or elaborate sets. Everything was simple and limited.

With Big Hit unable to secure major media visibility, the solution was to double down on emerging social media platforms. They began producing vlogs and posting on global apps like YouTube and Twitter (now X), as well as local Korean networks such as Naver, Daum Cafe, and KakaoStory.

“Someone at the company said blogs were trending, so we decided to try. It seemed fun, so we started. We used a small laptop, and it was hard because I had never done it before. But I gave it my best.”

(Jin – Beyond the Story)

BangtanTV: The Beginning of the BTS and ARMY Connection

The first video on BTS’s YouTube channel, BangtanTV, marked the start of their digital journey with the ARMY. Titled “Vlog: Dance Practice by Jimin,” it was released even before their official debut, showing Jimin practicing his dance with dedication and precision. This early footage not only showcased the members’ talent but also established the first connection between BTS and their fans — a bond that has grown ever since.

That’s how the BANGTANTV we know today was born.

I don’t know if something like this had ever been done before. And with an unexpected advantage at that time, when the internet was still taking its first steps: while TV shows were made in Korea for a Korean audience, any content posted online had the potential to go global — especially if it included English. And in that, BTS had a big plus: a fluent English-speaking leader, a guy named Rap Monster 😊.

Let’s speak English!

But when it comes to music and dance, there are no language barriers. Proof? Any new ARMY can spend years watching endless BTS videos. And believe me: just when you think you’ve seen it all, a new clip, photo, or audio will pop up — something you’ve never seen before. And often, something you never even imagined. BTS always finds a way to surprise you.

But the fandom is just as surprising.

ARMY BTS Rises and Dominates

While BTS worked hard to become complete entertainers, ARMY expanded far beyond what’s expected of a fanbase.

There are things that are part of the “K-pop rulebook” — and ARMY follows them religiously. In the fandom, we have collectors (people who collect all kinds of BTS-related merch), streamers (crucial for keeping BTS at the top of global charts), voters (who dedicate themselves to award shows), content creators for all kinds of social media, channel admins, subbers (who translate Korean content into local languages), and more.

Some people juggle multiple fandom tasks while also studying or working. Others “specialize” in just a few, depending on their personality, schedule, and — let’s be real — budget.

Of course, not everyone gets deeply involved. But ARMY is one of the most active fandoms in the world — and when it comes to promoting or protecting BTS, they are relentless.

And, as I said, surprising. Because ARMY changes the world.

Social Impact of BTS ARMY

The BTS ARMY is known for its dedication to social causes. The fandom has organized numerous donation campaigns, including contributions for natural disaster victims, educational programs, and social equality initiatives. Notable examples include donations for earthquake relief, support for food banks, and funding educational projects in underprivileged communities.

In 2017, BTS partnered with UNICEF to launch the Love Myself campaign, aimed at ending violence against children and teenagers. ARMY strongly supported this initiative, raising significant funds for the cause.

One of the most impactful moments was in 2020, when ARMY raised over one million dollars for the Black Lives Matter movement, matching BTS’s own donation.

Environmental Projects

ARMY has also shown strong commitment to environmental sustainability. On several occasions, fans organized tree-planting events, beach cleanups, and recycling initiatives in honor of BTS members’ birthdays.

ARMY and Social Causes in Brazil

The fandom is also powerful in Brazil. During the Pantanal wildfires in September 2020, Brazilian fans brought national attention to the crisis and contributed to a meaningful cause. Using social media, they promoted the hashtag #ARMYHelpThePlanet and raised an initial R$50,000 to provide logistical support for firefighters of the Instituto Homem Pantaneiro (IHP), a local NGO working to protect the southern Pantanal region.

Incredible actions take place all over the country, such as the #ArmyHelpManaus campaign, which organized crowdfunding to support local hospitals. In southern Brazil, during the 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul, ARMYs joined forces to donate money and food — and many even helped rescue animals separated from their owners by the disaster.

ARMY Birthday Projects

BTS members’ birthdays are special occasions for ARMY. Fans worldwide organize events, make donations, and launch social media campaigns to celebrate them. For instance, in 2018, Jimin’s fans raised funds to build a school in his name, showing the depth of their love and admiration for him.

Art Projects – When ARMY Creates with Passion

The love and creativity of ARMY are often expressed through art. Fans create fan art, videos, fanfics, and other creative content inspired by BTS. These projects not only showcase the fans’ talent and passion but also help strengthen the community and spread love for the group.

BTS Never Stops — And Neither Does ARMY

Anyone who thought ARMY would disappear during BTS’s 2022 pause due to mandatory military service was wrong. That “hiatus” was anything but a break in content and artistic output.

All seven members launched solo careers, releasing new albums — including Agust D’s tour (SUGA’s alter ego) and, more recently, J-Hope’s tour. Jin debuted his variety show Run Jin, in the spirit of Run BTS, featuring hilarious episodes and fun guests. Meanwhile, SUGA became a Korean version of Pedro Bial on Suchwita. And let’s not forget the photobooks, MVs, travel shows (Are You Sure?)… So much content!

While BTS kept fans well-fed with new content, ARMY didn’t let go either. BTS — and their solo projects — continued topping charts worldwide. The fandom kept creating content, streaming, voting, collecting — doing everything they used to do, and maybe even more.

Instead of following just one group, ARMY now supports BTS and each of its seven members as solo artists.

Not Everything Is Perfect in BTS ARMY

Does ARMY sometimes go overboard? Absolutely — and that’s to be expected from such a passionate fandom. Sometimes, fans may lose control with excessive displays of affection and protection toward the group.

But that passion — though intense — has nothing to do with toxic behavior like hate towards other groups or fandoms on social media, or spreading unfounded “ships” (imaginary romantic pairings), solo stanning (claiming to support only one member… really?), OT6 mindsets, or anything less than OT7 loyalty.
Let’s be clear: that’s not what being a real ARMY is about.

But what does it mean to be a “real ARMY”?

There isn’t a single answer to such a complex question. It involves a lot of passion and stems from a very personal experience — even if it’s shared collectively.

We could say that being BTS ARMY is a lifestyle. It goes far beyond simply enjoying BTS, even though yes, you can just like them. But trust me — you might start with the music, the edits… and before you know it, you’re spending part of your free time voting or streaming. Love always demands a bit of dedication.

And this love is mutual — deeply returned by BTS to ARMY. It’s in JK’s tattoo, in RM’s heartfelt speeches, in V’s borahae, in Hobi’s contagious hope and joy, in Jimin’s ongoing efforts to grow, in Jin’s endless characters like a K-drama actor, and in Yoongi, who may seem reserved but constantly turns emotions into art for us.
ARMY is spoiled by all seven. Here’s just one example (out of thousands):

Jin thanking ARMY at MAMA 2018

<iframe title="Jin yelling ARMY in 2018 MAMA FANS' CHOICE in JAPAN! But ARMYs know the stories. For many, BTS is so much more than just a group of talented and attractive men. You’ve probably heard it before: “BTS isn’t therapy, but it heals.” And it’s true.

People often say that when they needed something — BTS appeared (or reappeared) in their lives with a song, a music video, a quote… something that made a real difference.

There are real stories of people overcoming depression or anxiety after becoming part of the BTS ARMY. People who regained self-esteem, found strength, and kept moving forward.

ARMY is admirable. It’s not perfect — because it’s made of people — but it has become a support network, a space for connection and exchange. Many friendships (and even relationships!) have started through ARMY and continue for a lifetime.

Common Questions About BTS ARMY

What does it mean to be ARMY in BTS?

Being ARMY means being part of BTS’s fandom — the biggest male K-pop group today. More than just fans, ARMYs support and promote BTS while also participating in social and artistic causes, creating real impact.

Why ARMY?

ARMY stands for “Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth.” It was officially adopted in 2013 and represents the strong connection between fans and the group.

Why are BTS fans called ARMY?

“Army” means a military force — symbolizing the fans’ loyalty and unconditional support for BTS. The ARMY symbol features two open doors. When combined with BTS’s logo, they form a shield, representing unity and protection between both sides.

Conclusion: ARMY is BTS, BTS is ARMY

BTS ARMY is more than just a fandom — it’s a global community that influences not only music, but also social and economic causes. The relationship between BTS and their fans is built on mutual love, respect, and support, creating a bond that’s rare in the music world. And this connection continues to grow and make a real difference around the globe.

The BTS ARMY is an extraordinary example of how a fandom can transcend admiration and become a force for good. From unwavering support for BTS to countless humanitarian efforts, ARMY proves that love for music can be a powerful catalyst for change.
The story of ARMY is a living testament to the power of community, creativity, and shared love among millions of fans worldwide.

And you?
