Before BTS: from Daegu’s underground rap scene to Big Hit

Min Yoon-gi was born on March 9, 1993, in the city of Daegu, South Korea, in the Buk-gu district. Since childhood, he always showed a strong interest in music and technology, which would later define his professional path. Raised in a lower-middle-class family, he faced many financial difficulties throughout his youth but never gave up on his passion for music.

Yoongi’s interest in hip-hop began early, when he first heard the song Ragga Muffin by the duo Stony Skunk. The sound, unlike anything he had heard before, sparked his curiosity about the genre. Later, upon discovering the group Epik High, he decided he wanted to become a rapper and began exploring the world of hip-hop more deeply.

While still in high school, he adopted the stage name Gloss and started to stand out in Daegu’s underground rap scene. At just 13 years old, he was already writing his own songs and learning to use MIDI to produce beats. At the same time, he began working at a small recording studio in the city, where he honed his skills as a songwriter and music producer. At 17, he joined an underground rap group called D-Town, where he had the opportunity to collaborate with other rappers and release his first productions.

It was during this period that Yoongi started selling beats and establishing himself as a music producer. However, the industry’s reality was tough, and he often had to choose between paying for the bus fare home or buying food. In interviews, Suga has shared that he went through extremely difficult times but never considered giving up, because he knew he wanted to live off music.

The First Step into Big Hit Entertainment

In 2010, at the age of 17, Min Yoon-gi decided to audition in hopes of entering the music industry in a more structured way. He learned about the Hit It Audition, a rap competition promoted by Big Hit Entertainment, and decided to apply. What initially seemed like a long shot turned out to be a turning point in his life.

At the audition, Suga not only demonstrated his rap skills, but also his talent as a music producer. He modified the beat he was given for the performance, adding his own identity to the instrumental. This caught the judges’ attention, and by the end of the competition, Yoongi had secured second place, earning his spot as a trainee at Big Hit Entertainment.

At first, his goal was to work as a producer, as he didn’t believe he had the profile of an idol. However, Bang Si-hyuk, CEO of Big Hit, saw potential in his rap talent and convinced him to join the group that was being formed at the time: BTS.

The Trainee Years

Min Yoon-gi moved to Seoul on November 7, 2010, to begin his journey as a trainee at Big Hit Entertainment. Adapting to his new life wasn’t easy: beyond the intense routine of training and recording, he had to deal with financial and emotional hardships.

One of the most difficult moments of his pre-debut life occurred during his trainee period, when he was in a motorcycle accident while working as a delivery rider to supplement his income. The accident resulted in a serious shoulder injury that would affect him throughout his career and, years later, would require corrective surgery. Out of fear of being kicked out of the company, Suga hid his condition for a while, until Big Hit discovered the truth and began supporting him in his treatment.

During the training years, Suga shared a dorm with the other trainees who would later form BTS. The group went through many uncertainties before debuting, including line-up changes and doubts about the project’s viability. However, the determination of Yoon-gi and the other members kept them working hard toward their debut.

Even before the official debut, Suga was already actively participating in BTS’s music production. His talent as a producer began to stand out within the company, and he contributed to the composition and production of several songs that would be included in the group’s early albums.

In addition to his musical skills, Yoon-gi also trained in dance, an area where he initially lacked confidence. He has stated in various interviews that he always saw himself as a rapper and producer, and that learning to dance was one of the biggest challenges of his trainee journey.

The Meaning of “Suga” and “Agust D”

During his trainee period, Min Yoon-gi was given his official stage name within BTS: Suga. The name was chosen by Bang Si-hyuk and represents the first syllables of “shooting guard”, the position Suga played in basketball during school. The name also reflects his calm and “sweet” personality (like sugar in English).

In addition to Suga, he also adopted the name Agust D for his solo career. This stage name holds special meaning: “Agust D” is a reversal of “DT Suga”, where DT stands for Daegu Town, his hometown, and Suga refers to his stage name in BTS. The name symbolizes his identity as a solo rapper and his connection to his underground hip-hop roots.

Support (and Challenges) from Family

Throughout his pre-debut life, Suga faced resistance within his own family regarding his choice to pursue a music career. On several occasions, he mentioned that his parents didn’t support his decision to become a rapper, as they saw music as an unstable path with no financial guarantees.

His older brother was one of the few who supported him from the beginning, encouraging him to follow his passion. This family conflict inspired the song “Never Mind”, released on the album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2, where Suga shares his experience of facing criticism and following his dreams despite adversity.

Over time, his parents came to accept and support his career, especially after BTS achieved global recognition. Today, Suga has expressed in interviews that he feels proud for having followed his instincts and persisted in music, even in the face of difficulties.

The Road to Debut

After three years of intensive training, Min Yoon-gi finally debuted as a member of BTS on June 13, 2013, with the release of the single “No More Dream”, from the album 2 Cool 4 Skool.

Even after debuting, his identity as a solo artist was never set aside. He continued writing and producing his own music, culminating in the release of his first mixtape, “Agust D”, in 2016.

Min Yoon-gi’s journey from an underground rapper in Daegu to one of the most influential artists in K-pop reflects his passion, persistence, and love for music. His story is a testament to overcoming adversity and dedication, showing that even in the face of challenges and uncertainty, it’s possible to turn dreams into reality.

His baritone voice, combined with his technical rap skills and piano talent, added depth to BTS’s music over the years.

Debut and Early Releases

BTS made their debut with the album 2 Cool 4 Skool, featuring the title track “No More Dream”, where Suga showcased his impactful and unique rap style. From the start, his role in the group went beyond just performing—he was already actively involved in writing and producing music.

In BTS’s early years, the group followed a hip-hop-driven musical line, addressing themes like the challenges of youth and the search for identity. Albums like O!RUL8,2? (2013) and Skool Luv Affair (2014) featured tracks where Suga played a significant role, both in composition and performance.

During the The Most Beautiful Moment in Life era (HYYH, 2015–2016), Suga further solidified his role as one of the main architects of BTS’s musical identity. He was responsible for the track “Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” (HYYH Pt.1, 2015), a song that reflects on the struggles of growing up and societal expectations. In the next album, HYYH Pt.2 (2015), he wrote “Never Mind”, which talks about perseverance and the difficulties he faced on his personal and professional journey.

  • “Telepathy” (BE, 2020) – Created during the pandemic, sharing a positive message of connection between BTS and their fans.

Beyond his contributions, Suga helped shape the sound of each BTS era. During the WINGS era (2016), for example, he released his first solo track within BTS, “First Love“, an autobiographical song about his connection to music and piano. In the Love Yourself era (2018), he explored a lighter and more melodic side with “Trivia: Seesaw“, a song about the challenges of relationships.

Lyrics and Themes

A defining trait of Suga’s songwriting in BTS is his ability to address deep and often overlooked topics in the music industry. He wrote numerous songs about mental health, perseverance, social pressure, and personal identity. This sincere and emotional approach has resonated with fans worldwide, making him one of the group’s most respected members.

In “Interlude: Shadow” (Map of the Soul: 7, 2020), Suga reflects on the pressures of fame and how recognition can carry an emotional burden. The song, which served as an introduction to the album’s narrative, was praised for its lyrical depth and sophisticated production.
