BTS at the Grammys: nominations, performances and why the group is out of 2027

Five nominations, three performances and a new chapter in 2026: the BTS Grammy story is one of the most talked-about among ARMY. The seven were the first K-pop artists nominated for the most famous award in American music, and they took “Dynamite” and “Butter” to the ceremony’s stage.

In this post, we tell the whole story in order: the first trip to the Grammys, every nomination and its category, the performances, the members’ solo work, the debate over the group never winning and why BTS won’t compete at the 2027 Grammys.

Quick answer

  • Nominations: 5, between 2021 and 2023.
  • Wins: none, so far.
  • Performances: “Old Town Road” with Lil Nas X (2020), “Dynamite” (2021) and “Butter” (2022).
  • First time: as presenters of an award, on February 10, 2019.
  • 2027 Grammys: on July 29, 2026, BTS announced they wouldn’t submit the album ARIRANG or its songs, so the group isn’t competing this time.

BTS at the Grammys: every nomination

On the group’s official profile on the Grammy website, BTS has five nominations and no wins. All of them came in three editions in a row:

  • 63rd Grammys (2021): Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, with “Dynamite“.
  • 64th Grammys (2022): Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, with “Butter“.
  • 65th Grammys (2023): Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, with “My Universe”, alongside Coldplay.
  • 65th Grammys (2023): Best Music Video, with “Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)”.
  • 65th Grammys (2023): Album of the Year, as featured artists on Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres.

Coldplay’s “Higher Power” was not nominated, and BTS has never competed in the main categories under their own name, like Record of the Year or Song of the Year. The Album of the Year nomination came from their feature on the Coldplay album.

2019: BTS’s first time at the Grammys

The first step came on February 10, 2019, at the 61st Grammys, in Los Angeles. The seven took the stage to present Best R&B Album, which went to H.E.R. It was the first time Korean artists stood on the awards stage.

That same year, Love Yourself: Tear was among the nominees for Best Recording Package. That category, however, rewards the album’s art direction, not the artist, so it doesn’t count toward the group’s nominations. Relive the whole year in BTS in 2019.

2020: Old Town Road with Lil Nas X

On January 26, 2020, BTS performed at the Grammys for the first time. The group was part of the “Old Town Road All-Stars”, alongside Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo, Mason Ramsey and Nas. It was the first performance by Korean artists at the ceremony.

Months later, on November 24, 2020, came the news ARMY had been waiting for: “Dynamite” was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, the first Grammy nomination for a K-pop act. See more in BTS in 2020.

2021: Dynamite on the rooftop and the first nomination

The 63rd Grammys took place on March 14, 2021, still during the pandemic. BTS performed from Seoul, on a set that recreated the Los Angeles stage: the performance starts backstage and ends on a lit-up rooftop, with fireworks and the city in the background. It was the first time the group performed one of their own songs at the Grammys.

The Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award went to “Rain on Me”, by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. On November 23, 2021, BTS was nominated again in the same category, this time with “Butter”. The whole year is in BTS in 2021.

2022: Butter on stage, in Las Vegas

Postponed from January because of the Omicron variant, the 64th Grammys were moved to April 3, 2022, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas. It was BTS’s first in-person performance on the Grammy stage: a spy-movie “Butter”, with lasers and an appearance by Olivia Rodrigo. Billboard ranked it No. 1 on its list of the best performances of the night.

Once again, the trophy went to another song: “Kiss Me More”, by Doja Cat featuring SZA. A few days later, the group played the Permission to Dance On Stage concerts in the same city.

2023: three nominations at once

On November 15, 2022, BTS received three nominations for the 65th Grammys: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“My Universe”, with Coldplay), Best Music Video (“Yet to Come”) and Album of the Year, as featured artists on Music of the Spheres. “Yet to Come” was the first Korean-language song ever nominated for a Grammy.

The ceremony was on February 5, 2023, at Crypto.com Arena, in Los Angeles. The group didn’t perform: Jin had already enlisted in December 2022, and the members were focused on their solo projects. None of the three nominations turned into a trophy.

Jimin, Jung Kook and the other members at the Grammys

With the group on a break and the seven doing military service between 2022 and 2025, the question changed: has any member been nominated on his own? As of the 2026 edition, no.

  • 2024 Grammys: all seven submitted solo releases in different categories. Jimin submitted “Like Crazy” for Song of the Year and Best Music Video, and Jung Kook submitted “Seven” for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. None of the members’ work made the final list.
  • 2025 Grammys: once again, no member was among the nominees.
  • 2026 Grammys: Jin, RM and j-hope had songs submitted, like Jin’s “Don’t Say You Love Me” and RM’s “Neva Play” with Megan Thee Stallion. None were nominated.

All of the seven’s solo releases are in BTS solo songs, and you can get to know each of them in BTS members.

BTS Grammy 2027: why the group won’t compete

BTS came back in 2026 with the album ARIRANG, released on March 20, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with “SWIM” at No. 1 on the Hot 100. Even so, the group isn’t in the running at the 69th Grammys.

On July 29, 2026, the seven posted the same message on Instagram: BTS decided not to submit ARIRANG or its songs to this year’s Grammys. In the note, they said they want the group’s music to be heard and loved for what it is, without being divided by region or language.

The announcement came just over a month after the Recording Academy created, in June, the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, for songs with significant use of an Asian language. BTS’s note doesn’t mention the category, but a lot of people connected the two. The next day, the Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., said he was sad about the decision, that he respects it and that competing in a genre category doesn’t stop anyone from competing in the general categories. In August, the Academy said it was listening to the criticism and reevaluating the category.

In practice: the eligibility period for this edition covers releases from August 31, 2025 to August 28, 2026, and BTS really didn’t submit any songs. The 69th Grammy nominations come out on November 16, 2026, and the ceremony will be on February 7, 2027, at Crypto.com Arena, in Los Angeles, without BTS in the running.

Why has BTS never won a Grammy?

This is one of the oldest debates in the fandom. BTS was the first K-pop act nominated, performed three times and broke records on the American charts, but the five nominations ended without a trophy. The group has never received a nomination in the general categories, the biggest of the night.

In November 2019, when BTS was left out of the 2020 Grammy nominations, Forbes published a line ARMY never forgot: “But as BTS continue smashing records and the Grammys continue to lose relevance, who really needs who?” In July 2026, when the group announced they wouldn’t submit ARIRANG, the question started circulating among fans again, and it has never made more sense.

For many fans and critics, the Grammys were slow to recognize music made outside the United States and sung in other languages. On February 1, 2026, “Golden”, from the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack, became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy, for Best Song Written for Visual Media. BTS’s decision to sit out the 2027 Grammys reignited the conversation: for some, the Asian category opens up space for the genre; for others, it keeps Asian artists away from the main stage.

Meanwhile, the group’s trophy collection keeps growing at other awards shows, like the American Music Awards and MAMA. See them all on our BTS awards page.
