Songs Released
RM – “Where U At”
At the start of the month, RM released “Where U At”, a song he had written three years earlier, in his first year of high school. The song is about the struggles and pressure young people face while searching for a purpose in life.
It questions self-worth in a society that measures success by money and status. RM conveys his frustration with social and family expectations, showing the anguish of feeling lost.
The repeated phrase “Where U At” symbolizes that endless search for identity and direction, along with the wish to escape responsibilities for a while.
SUGA – “All I Do Is Win”
Another standout release was SUGA’s “All I Do Is Win”. He revealed that the track was finished in April 2011, around the same time RM wrote “Rap Monster”. However, it was only officially released in 2013.
The song uses the original DJ Khaled beat from “All I Do Is Win”, and it has a relaxed, humorous tone.
In a blog post, SUGA joked:
“I’m a rapper who steals young girls’ hearts, but so far no victims have been reported. If there are any, please send your reports via Twitter!”
“School of Tears” – RM, SUGA & Jin
A special collaboration between RM, SUGA and Jin brought “School of Tears”, a song inspired by the documentary “School of Tears”, broadcast on January 13, 2013. The song deals with the harsh reality of school bullying and criticizes the education system and society.
The song’s main themes include:
- The feeling of helplessness and the “good kid complex”, where students try to please everyone but end up becoming accomplices to the problem.
- School as a “square ring”, where everyone becomes a spectator or even a participant in the bullying.
- Society as a survival-of-the-fittest space, where the weak are constantly oppressed.
- The reflection that there are no winners in bullying – in the end, everyone loses.
SUGA said on the blog that he wrote this song after watching the documentary and thinking about the topic. He said he didn’t want to explain the song too much, but hoped listeners would understand the message he wanted to get across.
RM – “Favorite Girl”
RM also released “Favorite Girl”, a song he wrote, mixed and performed himself, using Marques Houston’s original track “Favorite Girl”.
The song is about a past love, remembering promises made when they were young and asking why things didn’t work out. RM expresses how much he misses that special person and how hard it is to forget them, even after so long.
In a post on the BTS blog, he revealed that he wrote “Favorite Girl” the previous winter, inspired by a girl he really liked. He hoped the song could warm the hearts of those who listened, just as he felt while writing it.

SUGA & Jimin – The Melon Music Awards win
SUGA and Jimin celebrated BTS’s win at the Melon Music Awards, where they received “Best New Artist”. SUGA said the group had dreamed of this moment for a long time, and the win was extremely motivating.
Jimin told a funny story from before the award, when a staff member told them to grab the microphone and he wasn’t sure if that meant they had won. On stage, they realized they really had won and were overjoyed.
Unlike what people expected, nobody cried, because right after the award they had a performance and needed to focus. They thanked fans and said 2013 was an unforgettable year for BTS.
Jin & V – Free time after promotions
Jin started the log alone but soon pulled V in. They talked about how they were spending their free time after promotions, saying they were training more and lifting weights.
V said he was watching the drama “Reply 1994” before bed, and Jin asked him to imitate an accent from the show, which made them both laugh. They ended the log on a relaxed note, saying that even while resting they were still focused on improving.
Jungkook – The gym and musical dreams
Jungkook shared a log about his routine and dreams. He revealed he was waking up early to go to the gym, focused on building muscle and getting stronger.
While the hyungs worked on new songs, he said he couldn’t wait to hear the finished recordings and hoped to record his vocal parts soon. He also mentioned going out for Korean barbecue with Bang PD-nim and praised the quality of the meat.
He also said he was working hard on his singing and dreamed of singing as well as Justin Bieber. Determined, he ended the log saying he believed he would reach that level one day.

When he walked into the practice room, the members surprised him with a cake, but the celebration was quick, since the group devoured it all in just 15 seconds. Jin joked, calling them “super piggies”, and was impressed by how fast everyone ate.
He also thanked fans for their messages and said he was moved to see so many saying “Thank you for being born”. He promised to keep working hard so he would never disappoint them.
Finally, Jin said that, since it is a Korean tradition to eat seaweed soup (미역국) on your birthday, he wanted to follow the custom, but none of the members knew how to cook. So he decided to buy a ready-made version at the store. Before ending, he left a message for his mom, asking her to make him soup sometime.

Performances, shows and behind the scenes of 2013
In their debut year, BTS never stopped: weeks of performances on music shows (M Countdown, Inkigayo, Show Champion and more), the first BANGTAN BOMBs and YouTube logs, dance practices, fansigns, the group’s first reality show, Rookie King: Channel Bangtan, and the night of their first award at the Melon Music Awards. It’s a lot of content, and much of it is on the official BANGTANTV channel.
Conclusion: BTS’s Legacy and Why 2013 Matters in Their Story
2013 was a turning point in BTS’s history. From their debut, the group had to fight challenges that went far beyond simple competition with other idols.
As a group from a small company, without the resources and influence of the big agencies, BTS was met with skepticism by the industry and by part of the Korean public.
From the start, the group was criticized for its aesthetic and concept. Their name was mocked, their outfits were called cheap, and their attempt to bring a hip-hop style to K-pop was questioned.
They were accused of being “too hip-hop” for the idol scene but “not hip-hop enough” for the Korean hip-hop community.
Comments like those from rapper B-Free, who belittled BTS as “made-up idols”, show the prejudice the members faced, something that would last for years.
There was also distrust about their musical authenticity. BTS’s lyrics dealt with themes like youthful frustration and social pressure, but many doubted that an idol group was really involved in writing its songs.
In a scene dominated by groups shaped to please the general public, BTS seemed out of place.
However, 2013 wasn’t just a year of struggle – it was also the starting point of a revolution.
With a limited budget, BTS bet on the strength of their performances and their closeness to fans. Songs like No More Dream, We Are Bulletproof Pt.2 and N.O carried a strong, authentic message that drew in a loyal audience.
The international response also made a difference. Even before debut, fans around the world discovered BTS and started promoting the group on their own on social media, especially Tumblr and Twitter.
The bond between BTS and ARMY grew organically, without relying on the traditional marketing strategies used by big companies.
Recognition started to come with the New Artist of the Year award at the Melon Music Awards. For a group from a small agency, this was significant, as it was the first step toward something bigger.
Even so, BTS remained a target of distrust within the industry. Many believed the group’s early success would be short-lived, and the obstacles of the K-pop system itself would keep standing in their way.
But BTS didn’t just survive their debut year – they changed the whole industry. 2013 shaped the group’s DNA and laid the foundation for the growth that would come in the following years.
Every criticism, every barrier and every challenge only strengthened the seven members’ determination to prove they belonged in K-pop, no matter the rules imposed by the market.
