BTS’s interview with Kwave

In March 2014, BTS gave an interview to Kwave magazine, sharing thoughts on success, growth and even their personal preferences. Each member talked a bit about their experiences since debut and their hopes for the future.

RM

“I think a truly strong man is someone who knows how to be considerate of others. At the same time, he should win people over with charisma. To be honest, it isn’t easy to consider other people’s feelings. And there are people who, when they are shown consideration, start to think it’s their right. Still, I believe a truly strong man is one whose kindness isn’t seen as weakness.”

Jin

“What would I do if I got a day off?
The other members say they would spend time with family or alone, but honestly, I don’t know what I’d do. Even traveling to see my family takes a long time… Ah, what do I do? I think I’d spend all my time just thinking about what to do. (ㅠㅠ)”

SUGA

“To be honest, I don’t usually remember anniversaries.
On days like Valentine’s Day and White Day, I buy chocolate for myself. I heard women don’t actually like getting candy! They say they laugh on the outside but are actually disappointed by my thriftiness. (Laughs) When I have a girlfriend, I want to write a song and sing it to her.”

J-HOPE

“First of all, she has to be taller than 1.68m!
That has always been an unchanging condition for my ideal type. Also, a woman with long black hair, who is smart and kind to me, and who dresses well. And who is a good cook. Ah! It would be nice if she knew how to support her husband well. Haha. Am I asking for too much? (Laughs)”

JIMIN

“A lot has changed since our debut. My situation, my mindset. The truth is that nothing can stay the same.
We debuted in June and I feel we’re getting a lot of love in such a short time. With every performance, our fans’ voices get louder. That makes me really happy. But my members and I try to stay calm and keep our original intentions.”

V

“My ideal type is a kind woman. I want her to be mentally healthy.
It would be even better if she spoke sweetly. Looks don’t matter that much to me, she just needs to be a good person.
But everyone around me says we should wait and see what my future girlfriend will be like.
I’ll wait and see too, I’m curious. (Laughs)”

JUNGKOOK

“Last year we won the rookie award, so this year I really want to win a grand prize.
I also hope you listen not just to our title track but to all the songs on our album.
It would be great if our songs could reach higher positions on the music charts.
For that to happen, we need to work hard!”

He started by mentioning that this was his first album review since 2 Cool 4 Skool, saying he had made the first one as a joke, but fans’ positive feedback encouraged him to keep going. Now, with the Skool Luv Affair promotions over, he decided to do this new review.

Album Design

SUGA showed the album cover, highlighting its school chalkboard look, with lettering that looks like it was written in chalk, reinforcing the concept of youth and school. He also opened the photobook and joked that his first appearance in the photos only came after several pages, mentioning that he used Jimin’s backpack during the shoot.

He also remembered that the shoot took place on one of the coldest days of the year, which made it quite challenging.

Track by Track

🔹 “Intro: Skool Luv Affair” – Picks up from the Outro of the previous mini album (O!RUL8,2?), with each member expressing a different way of confessing love.

🔹 “상남자 (Boy In Luv)” – SUGA revealed that producing this track was challenging, because he wanted the lyrics to be more accessible and memorable while keeping a strong, energetic rhythm. The title was chosen after a lot of discussion, with the members insisting the song be called Boy In Luv.

🔹 “Skit: Soulmate” – He said this skit came about spontaneously during a conversation with Bang PD, who walked into the studio while they were discussing the track.

🔹 “어디에서 왔는지 (Where Did You Come From?)” – Inspired by the success of 팔도강산 (Paldogangsan), this song has a rivalry between SUGA (representing Gyeongsang-do) and J-Hope (representing Jeolla-do), reflecting South Korea’s regional differences.

🔹 “하루만 (Just One Day)” – SUGA revealed he wrote this song while in the hospital after his appendicitis surgery. The idea was to create a romantic, dreamy mood, exploring the wish to spend a day with the person you love.

🔹 “BTS Cypher Pt.2: Triptych” – For him, this was one of the hardest tracks, because the production time was extremely short, and he had to write and record his part just two days before the album was finished. He also said the beat was intense, which required a lot of care so the vocals wouldn’t get drowned out.

🔹 “등골브레이커 (Spine Breaker)” – SUGA shared that this song came from his observations of students who wore expensive designer clothes paid for by their parents, contrasting different social realities. He stressed that he wasn’t judging anyone, just expressing different points of view on the subject.

🔹 “Jump” – Another track with special meaning for him, since it was written in 2011, before BTS debuted. SUGA revealed that parts of the song still contain original recordings of him and RM from that time, because he wanted to keep the authenticity of the original feeling.

🔹 “Outro: Propose” – He said he isn’t on this track, but believes it holds a hidden meaning within the album’s concept.

SUGA ended the review saying Skool Luv Affair was an extremely intense project, with recordings happening at the same time as choreography rehearsals and other promotional activities. He thanked the fans who enjoyed the album and said that, despite the challenges, he felt the final result was rewarding.

Finally, he joked that not even the BTS members got inside information about releases and that they all waited for teasers and announcements along with the fans.

🔹 “It was a chaotic album, but it was worth it. I hope you keep listening!”

American Hustle Life

American Hustle Life

American Hustle Life was a reality show aired by Mnet in 2014, with 8 episodes, where the BTS members traveled to Los Angeles thinking they were going on a trip for a new album, but were surprised to find out they would take part in intense training with hip-hop legends like Coolio, Tony Jones and Warren G.

For two weeks, the group took on challenges and missions to better understand the essence of hip-hop culture, one of the genres that most influenced their music since debut. Among the most iconic moments, the members had to learn to dance, write songs and even approach strangers on the street to promote an improvised show.

Besides the challenges and lessons, the show gave us iconic moments like the STAR IN ZOOM performances, where BTS performed special versions of “We Are Bulletproof Pt.2”, “Like” and other standout songs. The experience not only helped the group grow artistically but also strengthened their connection with hip-hop, an essential element of BTS’s early phase.

The show was a great learning experience for BTS, especially for RM and Suga, who have always been passionate about hip-hop. It also gave us funny, emotional scenes and a closer look at the group’s dedication to growing musically. Today, American Hustle Life is fondly remembered by fans as one of the most memorable shows in BTS’s journey.

Go! BTS 2014: BTS’s experience at KCON in Los Angeles

GO!

GO! BTS was a TV special that followed BTS on their first trip to Los Angeles (USA) to take part in KCON 2014, one of the biggest K-pop events in the world. The show, aired on Mnet America, offered a more intimate, relaxed look at the group during this unforgettable experience.

The special featured never-before-seen footage, including the members going on special challenges at Laguna Beach, visiting the DFLA live studio and, of course, killing it on the KCON 2014 stage. It was one of the first moments when BTS started to gain more international recognition, interacting with fans outside Korea and showing all their charisma and talent.

Wrapping up BTS in 2014

In 2014, BTS was in a crucial phase of their journey, where determination and hard work started to pay off more visibly.

Although they still faced resistance from the industry and the Korean public, the group was already showing clear signs that they were different.

This was the year they started to solidify their identity, improve their performances and, most importantly, build a deep, genuine connection with their fans.

The shift from the school concept of the Skool Luv Affair era to the intensity of Dark & Wild marked a maturing of both their sound and their lyrical approach.

The lyrics, always full of messages about youth, dreams and challenges, started to become even more personal and intense, reflecting the members’ real experiences.

Their artistic growth was clear not only in the music but also in how they performed. BTS started to gain more space on stages and at award shows, even without the backing of the big entertainment companies.

Another defining factor of 2014 was the relationship between BTS and ARMY. If at the start of their career the fans were just a small group of people who believed in the boys’ potential, that year the fanbase started to grow exponentially.

BTS’s active presence on social media, daily content and care for the fandom were essential to that connection, making them one of the first groups to truly build a global online community, something that would later become one of their greatest strengths.

Despite the challenges and criticism they still received, BTS never stopped believing in their own music and the message they wanted to share. Bang PD, as the great mentor behind the group, certainly saw huge potential in them, but did the members themselves imagine the size of the impact they would have in the future?

Looking at interviews and statements from the time, we can see they had bold dreams, but also a signature humility of people willing to work nonstop to achieve something meaningful. As the members themselves would say years later, they never imagined going this far.

If 2014 was a year of maturing and self-affirmation, 2015 would be a period of even more intense change. BTS’s story was only just beginning to unfold, and the next chapters would bring new achievements, challenges and unforgettable moments.
